Dawn Riggs has spent more than 20 years working for the Federal Government. She joined the U.S. Navy at age 19 and served 3 1/2 years. Following that, she worked as a civilian for the Navy for an additional 3 years. She went on to complete her BA, MS, and PhD in clinical psychology. The rest of her government service (18 years) has been in the VA system with six of those years spent as a supervisor.
Dawn grew up in Detroit, a part of a family that celebrated the United Auto Workers (UAW) and teachers' unions. She likes to share her pride in family members who are involved in union organizing and representation It is for this reason that soon after she left her position as supervisor of the Mental Health Clinic at VA Reno, she joined the AFGE local 2152 as a steward and after a year, was asked to take on the role of Executive Vice President.
When Dawn isn't at work, she can be found spending time with her Maltese and Shih Tzu, enjoying the company of her husband, camping, sampling wines, tending to her 18 rose bushes, meditating, and trying new recipes. She is a grandmother and a rabid Auburn University Tigers fan. And her not-so-long-term goal is to retire to the west coast of Puerto Rico.
